What does your native place mean to you? Home? What experiences do you “bring home” with you each day? Each of us would answer these questions differently.

“I close my eyes and see every tree, every path, every little road, even the neighbours,” said Vytautas Šerys, who was born in Anykščiai District, speaking about his native land – the place that became the starting point of his artistic journey and an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

The fields, forests, streams and people of his native Naujasodis have remained not only in his memory but have also found their way into the artist’s sculptures.

The exhibition I’m Taking It Home, on view at the chapel – the cultural creation center of anykštėnai of the world until 15 October, presents wooden sculptures and their sketches, offering an intimate glimpse into V. Šerys’s creative process – from the first idea to the completed work of art.

The drawings, explorations of line and initial ideas allow us to see a thought before it has taken definitive form. A fragment of nature observed, an experience lived or a memory gradually transforms into a distinctive visual language – a sculpture.

The sketches reveal that once a work has been realised in material, the sculptor

makes a detailed drawing of the finished piece, records its title, dimensions and date of creation, and concludes with the words “I’m Taking It Home”. The phrase seems to place a final full stop, marking the completion of the work.

We hope that after visiting Vytautas Šerys’s exhibition and the VR film inspired by his work, you will take home some new ideas and experiences of your own!
