We’re sharing highlights from the opening of Eglė Velaniškytė’s exhibition “Aš ateinu” and the meet-the-artist event, which took place on February 10 at the Angels Museum – Sacral Art Center.
During the event, the artist spoke about how her work is created and warmly engaged with attendees, answering questions about the exhibited pieces and her artistic journey. The painter also led an educational session — a discussion in the exhibition — with students from the Anykščiai Art School.
The exhibition “Aš ateinu” (literally “I am coming”) presents paintings from 2015–2022 that consistently explore biblical themes. The artist focuses primarily on two of Christianity’s central events — the Birth and the Resurrection of Christ — while also addressing other, less frequently examined but equally significant episodes described in Scripture.
Throughout the show, the artist reflects on themes of coming, arrival, and presence. The works speak to a quiet yet essential movement within the person — moments of opening, waiting, and acceptance. The title “Aš ateinu” becomes both a promise and an invitation: to pause, listen, and be. Speaking about the exhibition, Eglė Velaniškytė says she does not aim to compare her works with earlier sacred paintings; her goal is to capture the mindset and relationship with God of a 21st-century person.
This exhibition is part of the project “Promotion of understanding and appreciation of contemporary art in Anykščiai,” a cycle of contemporary visual-arts exhibitions and events that includes meetings with exhibiting artists, lectures, and conversations with art historians and educators. In addition to the shows themselves, accompanying talks with artists and art scholars are organized to help visitors engage more deeply with the work, listen to the environment, and start a dialogue through art. The project aims to develop professional art and promote understanding of contemporary art in the Anykščiai district.
The project is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Anykščiai District Municipality. The project’s media supporter is the regional news portal Anykšta, and the organizer is the Anykščiai Arts Center.
Eglė Velaniškytė’s painting exhibition “Aš ateinu” will be on view until March 16.
